Taiwan possesses abundant natural resources and diverse geographical landscapes, with 268 peaks exceeding 3,000 meters in elevation. In recent years, the number of hikers in Taiwan has gradually increased. However, mountaineering as a leisure activity carries certain risks, with a rising number of mountain-related incidents, among which getting lost is the most common. The aim of this study is to explore the perceived value and challenge intention of intermediate mountain hikers in Taiwan, focusing on whether perceived risk serves as a moderator or mediator. This study targeted hikers who have climbed intermediate mountains in Taiwan over the past two years, collecting 386 valid questionnaires. The research method involved an online survey using purposive and snowball sampling. Research instruments included personal background variables, Perceived Value Scale, Perceived Risk Scale, and Challenge Intention Scale, all measured using a Likert 5-point scale. Data processing and statistical analysis were performed using SPSS 22.0, including descriptive statistics, independent sample t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and regression analysis.
The results indicate significant differences in perceived value, perceived risk, and challenge intention based on the personal background variables of intermediate mountain hikers. Hikers with higher perceived risk were more thoroughly prepared with hiking apps, GPS capabilities, and offline maps. Significant correlations were found among perceived value, perceived risk, and challenge intention. Perceived value was a predictor of challenge intention; the higher the perceived value, the greater the challenge intention. Perceived risk partially mediated the relationship between perceived value and challenge intention but did not have a moderating effect. Mountaineering is an exhilarating and adventurous activity, yet due to the complex terrain, rich forest composition, high physical demands, and variable weather conditions of intermediate mountains, this study recommends that hikers thoroughly prepare before their trips. This includes physical training, understanding route difficulties, and monitoring weather changes. Additionally, preparing hiking apps, GPS functionalities, and downloading offline maps can enhance the safety of hiking activities.
