Family leisure activities are an essential aspect of leisure life, and outdoor hiking with family members can promote both physical and mental well-being, thereby achieving the benefits of family leisure activities. This study aims to understand the current participation status of family hikers, examine the differences and relationships among leisure involvement, family leisure benefits, and environmental attitudes, and explore the mediating role of family leisure benefits between leisure involvement and environmental attitudes.
The research targets family hikers in the Greater Taipei area, using purposive sampling and distributing questionnaires online. A total of 372 valid questionnaires were collected. The research instruments include the Leisure Involvement Scale, Family Leisure Benefit Scale, and Environmental Attitude Scale, all measured on a Likert 5-point scale. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 22.0, employing descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, Scheffé post hoc comparison, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis.
The results indicate that the majority of family hikers are female, aged between 46 and 50 years, and in the family life cycle stage where couples have adolescent or older children. Most are from nuclear families, hiking with spouses or children, and participate in hiking fewer than five times a year. The study finds that higher levels of leisure involvement among family hikers correlate with greater family leisure benefits and more positive environmental attitudes, with significant relationships among these variables. Leisure involvement and family leisure benefits significantly predict environmental attitudes, and family leisure benefits mediate the relationship between leisure involvement and environmental attitudes.
This study suggests that families should emphasize leisure activities and participate in hiking together. It also recommends that government agencies enhance the promotion of National Hiking Day, making hiking a nationwide activity. Collaborations with hiking clubs or community organizations to organize family hiking events can strengthen family cohesion and promote physical and mental health. Lastly, it is recommended to use public transportation for hiking activities to protect the environment.
