Taiwanese Hokkien and Korean languages have a rich variety of onomatopoeic words in their vocabularies, spanning across daily life, educational materials, music, and visual media. Onomatopoeic words are used extensively in conversations, letters, educational books for children, poetry, literature, popular songs, comics, and various forms of entertainment.
This study conducts a comparative analysis of the syllabic structure and meanings of onomatopoeic words with 2 to 4 syllables in Korean and Taiwanese Hokkien. In the second chapter,we delve into the phonological structure of both languages, covering consonants, vowels, and syllables. Additionally, the Taiwanese Hokkien phonological structure includes its distinctive tone system. The second chapter concludes by highlighting the similarities and peculiarities in phonological structures between the two languages. Chapters 3 and 4 focus on the structural composition and semantic usage of onomatopoeic words in Korean and Taiwanese Hokkien. Chapter 3 categorizes onomatopoeic words based on 2,3,or 4 syllables and explores variations in syllabic structure, accompanied by illustrative examples for better clarity of differences. Chapter 4 classifies onomatopoeic words based on their objects of imitation and their intended meanings, including appraise, derogation, emotion, transformations in parts of speech, and emphasis. This chapter also provides illustrative examples to enhance the understanding of the meanings and usage of onomatopoeic words. The concluding chapter,Chapter 5,summarizes the similarities and differences in phonological structure, compositional structure, and usage meanings between Korean and Taiwanese Hokkien. It investigates the reasons for the greater variation in the number of syllables in onomatopoeic words and explores the correlation between the most prevalent onomatopoeic objects and their reasons for prevalence in both languages.
