Franz Liszt (1811~1886), the Hungarian composer, wore a dual hat as a music critic and a pianist. He was also one of the primary figures representing the Romantic music era and is recognized as the first musician to perform from memory. Liszt's early compositional style leaned towards virtuosity and rich harmonic variations, while in his later years, his works gradually transitioned into a simpler and unadorned style.

The subject of this thesis is "Dance of Death" (Totentanz, S.525, 1838) by Liszt. This composition is a profoundly emotional and awe-inspiring piece that interprets death through various elements. The music's melody primarily consists of the "Dies Irae" theme, which recurrently appears throughout the entire piece and undergoes skillful variations in each variation. The composition utilizes a rich variety of rhythms, reflecting different emotions and scenarios. Additionally, harmony plays a crucial role in creating diverse harmonic effects through various variations and modulations.

This thesis centers around Liszt's "Dance of Death" and is divided into four main chapters. The first chapter serves as an introduction. The second chapter delves into the background of the composition "Dance of Death." The third chapter involves an analysis of the music and its interpretive performance. Finally, the fourth chapter concludes the thesis.
