The project is to explore Plato‟s concepts of perception () and appetitive desire (). Both the concepts are deeply involved with „body‟ which is considered with little importance in traditional or stereotyped „Plato‟. However, this research project will turn attention to the rich discussions on appetitive desire and perception in Plato, especially in the passages on the tripartite soul, art education and the cognitive significance of perception, in the Republic, Laws, Theaetetus, and Phaedrus, and thus attempt to provide a re-examination on Plato‟s aesthetics in the light of these two body-involved concepts. The research will be led by the controversial issues on the doctrine of the tripartite soul into an investigation on Plato‟s treatment of appetitive desire in his psychology and of perception as a kind of cognitive resource. It will mainly tackle the following themes: 1. How does Plato conceive the partition of the soul in the Republic? Does he conceive the elements within the soul as agent-like? 2. How does Plato conceive the partition of the soul in the Laws? 3. Review Plato‟s acceptance or rejection of art education in the Republic and Laws within the context of his tripartite soul. 4. Review Plato‟s „perception‟ as the cognitive resource for „appetitive desire‟, in the light of the epistemological discussion on perception in the Theaetetus and the distinction between belief () and knowledge () in the Republic. 5. Review the significance of perception and appetitive desire in the cognitive process toward the beauty itself. The project is subordinate to the research project „Studies on “Aesthetic Perception” in Chinese and Western Aesthetics‟. By the team work which provides opportunities for co-workers to share aesthetic views with each other, the project is to refresh our understanding of these two body-involved concepts in Plato‟s aesthetics and in connection with other studies in aesthetics as well.
