Insufficient Calcium intake is related to the occurrence of osteoporosis, hypertension, obesity, insulin resistant and breast cancer. Three consecutive Taiwan national surveys showed that calcium intake of all age groups were significantly bellowed the DOH recommendation. In addition to low calcium intake, with the loss of bone mass upon postmenopause, the prevalence of osteoporosis in women is even more serious. One forth of the women over 65 years old had osteoporosis in Taiwan. Therefore, increasing the calcium intake for women to prevent the osteoporosis is an important public health issue. This is a two-year research on junior high school female teachers. In the first year, a questionnaire survey focused on the influencing factors of calcium intake will be conducted. For the second year, the calcium intake promoting nutrition education program will be developed for junior high school teachers based on the survey and the effectiveness of the program will be evaluated. The program includes classroom lectures, also provides information and social support through website and e-mail to assist behavior change. This study will provide quantitative data on the influencing factors of calcium intake behavior, and develop a calcium intake promoting nutrition education program for junior high school teachers. It can also give the government agency a reference for establishing policy and education program to increase the calcium intake and osteoporosis prevention for other female groups.
