The yangqin is a globally recognized musical instrument. In recent years, new trends in its musical composition have emerged. Many performers have created yangqin pieces that draw on Western musical styles and compositional techniques, enriching and diversifying the repertoire. Innovative works have led to breakthroughs in the musical structure, melodic progression, playing techniques, and development of new timbres through different performance tools.
At the end of the last century, the evolution of the yangqin initially focused on changes in the instrument's craftsmanship and design, followed by the creation of numerous new compositions. Performers needed quick muting to address the lingering resonance produced by the yangqin during rapid chord changes, leading to the development of yangqin with pedal dampers. This study uses Zhang Zhao's first yangqin concerto, "Pan Gu," as an example to explore the origins of the yangqin damper and its application in musical scores. Through literature analysis, compositional techniques, musical structure, and musical interpretation, this work elucidates the creative background, conceptual ideas, characteristics, and methods of the piece, combined with the use of the yangqin damper for musical analysis and performance interpretation.
