With the popularity of smart phones, mobile photography has become a new form of media in modern society. Nowadays, cell phone photographic functions are robust and easy to operate. Anyone can capture noteworthy moments of life and share them on social media platforms at all times. The main purpose of this study is to explore the attractive factors and visual preferences in viewers of mobile photograph, and the aspects that stand out in photographic competitions of this category. The Evaluation Grid Method (EGM) of Miryoku Engineering is applied in the compilation of a network diagram used to analyze these attractive factors and investigate how these photographers turn abstract feelings into actual photographic works.
This study selected winning works from the largest and most iconic iPhone Photography Awards in the architectural categories as interview material, and conducted qualitative and in-depth interviews with ten prolific photographic experts to reveal the attractive essence and charm aspects of mobile photography. EGM results show that significant attractive features of mobile photography in the architectural categories are ‘better photographic composition’, ‘professional photographic techniques’, ‘good light and shadow’, ‘appropriate color coordination’, ‘visual elements alignment’, and ‘highlighting of the texture of the subject’. Further investigation will be conducted with Quantification Theory Type I analysis of questionnaires to further extract attractive factors for additional forms of photography, and document what the audience thinks are the attractive factors and preferences of successful mobile photography. The research results have the potential to provide phone photographers, with reference basis for creative perceptual intention criteria.
