This study uses narrative research methods to discuss the life stories of three senioragedmen in the manufacturing industry who have experienced unexpected career transitions. The research aims to achieve three objectives: first, to understand the career transition process of senior-aged men in manufacturing; second, to explore why they transit the occupation; and third, to examine their career resilience. Psychological Narrative Analysis is used to extract the life experiences portrayed by these three individual narrators.
The study discussed from the perspective of career resilience, reveals that in theearly stages of career transition, the narrators commonly discussed such as perceiving unstable company operations, actively seeking job opportunities, and adjusting their mindsets. Within these subjects, we could see their career resilience manifested through abilities in positive emotional adjustment and proactive strategies to enhance their sense of control. In the mid-term of career transition, common subjects include attempting different professions and facing challenges of job searching. These highlight their sustained career resilience from self-worth affirmation and positive values and beliefs.
In the late stages of career transition, the common subject centered on adapting to new work environments and job types, as well as accepting current situations and looking towards the future. All of this showcases their resilience in the ability to reframe perspectives, reconstruct meaning, acquire new skills, and adapt to new job roles.
Furthermore, the study conclusion discusses the unique aspects of careers in the
manufacturing industry referencing Thomas's (1989) theory of structural constraints. It reveals that social class environments, organizational arrangements within professions, and labor market segmentation will impose constraints on career choices formanufacturing workers. These challenges are particularly daunting during unexpected career transitions in senior age. However, the study also identifies advantages among senior-aged male workers in the manufacturing industry in Taiwan society and culture, which are the accumulated social connections and networks, having significant influence through their extensive social experiences.
In summary, the study aims to enhance multicultural perspectives among future
professionals and counselors, offering insights for counseling senior-aged workers in the manufacturing industry.
