At present, research on the sense of place among immigrants in mainland China mainly focuses on developed areas such as the Beijing Tianjin, Yangtze River Delta, and Pearl River Delta. However, discussions on the impact of digital mobile media in these areas focus on examining the changes in local perception and emotions caused by the use of certain apps or media content such as short videos. There is less exploration of the overall changes in human land relationships from the perspectives of local conflicts, spatial differences, and media lifestyles in small and medium-sized cities.
This study selected Chaozhou, a small town with strong traditional culture in Guangdong, as the research area,This study mainly adopts the perspective of the relationship between space and place in humanistic geography to explore how trans-provincial immigrants use digital mobile media to carry out local life and eventually form a sense of place in the process of local settlement. This study firstly sorts and analyzes the historical evolution of the relationship between space and place, puts forward the generating elements of place and sense of place in the digital mobile era and their relationship with space, and focuses on how digital mobile media introduces various spaces into place, thereby changing life at place and place perception of new citizens. On this basis, the framework of this study is formed, and three stages of the generation of new citizens' sense of place are put forward: the spatial encounter between new citizens and Chaozhou place, life at place of mediatization and the multi-space collage sense of place.
Research has found that the use of digital media has deeply integrated into the local experiences of new citizens, generating a mediatization’s sense of place. Media dominates the content and methods of local contact for new citizens, changing the traditional generation of body-based place ballet. At the same time, the influence of media is also constrained by social relationships. The degree of closeness between new citizens and their hometown not only affects the difference in their expectations of place, but also affects the way they use digital mobile media. This orientation of social relations in the experience of place is ultimately reflected in their sense of place. Digital mobile media changes the local lifestyle of new citizens, and influences their perception about the transplanted place through three different ways: media gaze, media reinforcement and media affect.
