To understand the impact of restorative justice on juvenile delinquents who have violated criminal laws, this study investigates whether the practice of restorative justice can promote self-reflection among delinquents, thereby reducing recidivism rates. Additionally, it explores whether restorative dialogues provide delinquents with the opportunity to engage in conversations with victims, fostering relationship restoration, and whether these dialogues enable delinquents and their parents to comprehend the victims' feelings and accept responsibility for their actions, ultimately focusing on the reintegration of delinquents into society. The purpose of this research is to examine the perspectives of delinquents after participating in restorative dialogues. This study targets juvenile delinquents and their parents involved in restorative dialogues within domestic juvenile cases. Data were collected and analyzed from interviews with five delinquents and their parents across four restorative events. The study employs a narrative research approach, utilizing grounded theory methodology to organize and present the collected interview data.
The findings are as follows: (1) Initially, delinquents typically feel anger and injustice when facing judicial events, often attributing some responsibility to the victims. It is only after the commencement of restorative dialogues that delinquents gradually recognize their own responsibilities, shifting the blame onto themselves. (2) Upon acknowledging their responsibilities, delinquents begin to formulate compensation plans, showing a willingness to actively take responsibility and express apologies to the victims. (3) When parents accompany delinquents during restorative dialogues and express their recognition of the delinquents' growth, it potentially enhances the positive connection in parent-child relationships. (4) Delinquents and their parents initially lack a clear understanding of the concept and purpose of restorative dialogues. It is only through participation that they begin to grasp the significance of restoration.
Based on the research findings, it is recommended that future relevant authorities promote the content of restorative justice to increase public awareness. Additionally, organizing seminars to cultivate professionals' understanding of the essence and importance of restorative dialogues is suggested.
