<Qmalup.
The Ptasan (Facial Tattoo) culture of the Atayal tribes represents the essence of 'adulthood,' 'sincerity,' and 'a lifetime.' It symbolizes the life journey that Atayal people go through from birth to death. Drawing from my background as an Atayal and my personal learning experiences, I created the music album《Htu Hongu Utux》using unique Atayal instruments. Through this endeavor, I aim to preserve and document Atayal culture and its distinctive instruments.
This essay focuses on the distinctive Atayal instruments used in the album 'Rainbow. Emergence,' including the Jew's-Harp, Xylphone, Pgagu (Headhunting Flute), and Eleven-tone Bamboo Pipe Organ. The essay analyzes five tracks from the album, which are: <Qwas Taring · Overture> , depicting the birth of a new life; <Ryax Qalang · Tribal Time>, portraying the sincere and caring sentiments among tribal members; <Gwagi Bzyacing · Sun and Moon> , which describes the lifelong commitment between married couples, comparing their bond to the eternal presence of the sun and moon; <Qmalup · Hunting> , illustrating how tribal elders guide the youth in hunting, and the title track <Htu Hongu Utux · Rainbow Emergence> , emphasizing the importance of never forgetting your identity, regardless of your location. The essay analyzes the concepts of composition, melody, and production arrangements to showcase how the distinctive Atayal instruments blend with conventional instruments.
Finally, the author hopes that introducing these distinctive instruments and analyzing the five songs in this album can serve as a valuable research reference for those interested in indigenous culture, as well as for cultural heritage preservationists and music creators |
