Based on the narrative research method, this study explored the life stories of
three Vietnamese immigrant women to understand their career development before
and after coming to Taiwan. There are two purposes of this research: (1) to
understand their family relationship and life adaptation, and (2) to understand their career development.Data was collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed through narrative psychology analysis. The results showed that all three storytellers chose to come to Taiwan through brokered marriage due to economic factors. After coming to Taiwan, they all encountered estrangement with different family members. While Mi and Lien faced estrangement in parent-child and marital relationships, and Hai had conflicts with her mother-in-law. All three storytellers also experienced changes related to their original families in Vietnam. Mi succeeded in building a house in her hometown, reversing her family's economic situation; Lien repaired her relationship with her family through faith after her father's failed investment which caused damage to the relationship of family members; Hai was relieved from the economic burden after her father's death. The life changes mentioned above also influenced the three storytellers’ marital and family status in Taiwan. Mi returned her focus to her family, reconnected with her mother through faith, and continued to flourish in her nail business career. Lien found her self-worth through charity and jelly flower creation after repairing her relationships with her original family, parent-child relationships, and marriage. Hai found herself in faith and social relationship and was able to maintain stability. This study provides unique perspectives on multiculturalism for further research, and also increases people’s understanding of women immigrants’ career development, which is helpful for immigrants counseling.
