Many valuable historical spaces and structures are designated as Cultural and Historic Heritage Sites so that they are protected by the formal political power, since passing Cultural Heritage Conservation Law in 1982 and being executed. With the rapid changes of our economy and society, the work of historic preservation and conservation is a dynamic process and it definitely is not static. The new concept of heritage adaptive-reuse, much more guaranteed in sustainable preservation, was evolved from the old idea of protecting historic assets as national monuments. Here, whatever kind of adaptive-reuses of the historic sites are, their new looks should not be different/against with its original purpose of conservation/preservation so that new generations have opportunities to realize what had happened before. However, with the encouragement from the government for the heritage adaptive reuse and without well-defined regulations, many new usages of historic sites are experimental, although the new usages show various new idea of conservation/preservation at the same time.
This study aims to examine the difference between conservation/preservation purpose and adaptive-reuse based on visitors after their visiting the heritages, and to understand whether the new generations are able to realize the historic evolutions.
Through literature review for understanding the types of heritage adaptive-reuses and conservation/preservation purposes and defining key research factors, field survey for recognizing the exiting usage, and questionnaire and statistical analyses for checking the differences between conservation/preservation purpose and adaptive-reuse, this study finds that different types of heritage adaptive reuse (Exhibition's interpretation vs. Mixed interpretive media) do affect different degrees of understanding original conservation/preservation purposes. Moreover, "visitor types (tourists or residents)," "revisiting times", "ability of obtaining interpretive information before visiting," and "the way of obtaining interpretive media" are closely associated with whether visitors (after visiting the historic sites) are able to understand the original conservation/preservation purposes. The study concludes that there is a need to define types of heritage adaptive-reuses carefully, so that conservation/preservation purposes are able to recognize by the visitors easily.
