Soft power has become one of the most popular areas of research in international relations in the 21st century and has also played an important role in the foreign policy of many countries. This thesis explores a small slice of soft power building in the People's Republic of China through the cultural programs of the ELTE Confucius Institutes. The aim of the thesis is to explore a under-researched area of soft power building at the institutional level by drawing conclusions from figures on how much and what kind of modern China-related programs a particular Confucius Institute organizes. A secondary aim is to correct generalizing claims in the literature. The program data used and tabulated in this thesis are taken from the website of the Confucius Institute of ELTE. The analysis and comparison of the data made it clear that many of the claims made in the literature are not correct in the case of the ELTE Confucius Institute, which has organized a number of social science programs and has sought to present contemporary China, the everyday life of the Chinese population and China's minorities. At the same time, it can be observed that the Confucius Institute in Budapest has gradually changed its program offerings since the change of leadership in the People's Republic of China in 2012. The research results suggest that a more nuanced and sophisticated approach to researching the Confucius Institutes is needed, as each Confucius Institute has unique characteristics, determined by the decisions of the leadership and the relationship between the host country and the PRC, and the institutional environment of each Confucius Institute.
