The present study aims to investigate the differences in score and choreography of difficult movements in optional routine of southern lion dance among the countries, to confirm the actual effect of movement difficulty on routine scoring. The notational analysis by video was used to record twenty final events in internationally official competitions of SLD from 2012 to 2020. A total eligible 99 routines from 7 countries were included to analysis. Results indicated that routines of China and Malaysia exhibit higher scores than other countries; and routines of Taiwan exhibit more total number of difficult movements than other countries. One the other hand, countries show separate preferences for performing difficult movements, but only routines of China and Malaysia have higher scores who also perform more difficult movements in type 9 and type 6, respectively, which might be contributed to improving fluency and enriching routine. Taken together, present study provided the initial evidence for difference in score and choreography of difficult movements in optional routine of southern lion dance among the countries. According to current findings, performing excessive difficult movements might not be benefited improvement in routine scoring, instead, it is suggested that the teams of southern lion dance should pursue a better balance between the quality of movements, lion's appearance, expressions, clearness of theme and musical accompaniment rhythm.
