The purpose of this study is to explore the model that a fortune teller applies Bazi theory to deal with the worries of the call-in audiences and the analysis of problems that the audiences had through a radio fortune telling program. The subject of this study is a radio program called "Happiness and Life", which is hosted by a fortune teller, Xuanlong.
Data collected by broadcast recordings for up to two years and the participants with sufficient information were selected and the data analyzed through purposive sampling. Methods of data analysis are content analysis and thematic analysis. The research questions are as follows. 1. The gender of the call-in audience, the relationship between the call-in audience and the client (the person who has the main issue to be assisted by the fortune teller), the clients’ gender, their main issue, and the intervention that the fortune teller made. 2. The language skills of the fortune teller have in analyzing one’s birth chart and telling fortune. 3. The process of radio fortune telling. 4. The similarities and differences between the process of radio fortune tellers and counsellors. 5. The discussion on whether the process of radio fortune telling meets the ethical standards of helping people.
Findings:
1. 70% of the call-in audiences are female and worries about themselves are the most
common questions asked, followed by questions about their children or husbands. Marriage, relationship, career, health and fortune make up a higher proportion, whereas academic achievement and lawsuit have a relatively small proportion of the main issues.
2. The language skills of the fortune teller possesses are according to traditional culture, language and context to confirm who is the client and his/her birth date (including a specific day, month and year), to analyze the birth chart and tell one’s fortune. In the process of fortune telling, the common techniques that the fortune teller applies are early warning, plain and straightforward interpretation, explanation, narrative inquiry, empathy, etc. to help the call-in audience understand their birth charts and focus on the main issues. When responding to requests from the audiences, the fortune teller supplements Chinese astrology- Bazi as a base with ethical and social values for advice, education or positive reinforcement to solve their problems.
3. The interactive process between radio fortune telling and the call-in audience begins
with the fortune teller picking up the phone call. The interaction is divided into three phases. Phase one: Interaction and birth chart arrangement (confirmation of the client, his/her specific birth date and the main issue). Phase two: Analysis and verification (analyze the birth chart, examine the hypothesis, and focus on the questions). Phase three: End of intervention (resolution to doubts, suggestion, termination).
4. Below are the commonalities between the radio fortune telling process and the
counselling process. 1. They are both helping people and the clients usually come with their issues. 2. Both of them have time limits, similar to one-time counselling. The differences between them are as follows. 1. The person seeking help is called the client in counselling, yet the call-in audience in radio fortune telling program is not necessarily to be the client but the agent asking questions for his/her client. 2. The client is the center of counselling sessions but the fortune teller is the leading character of radio fortune telling program.
5. The research subject, who is the fortune teller, has the virtue of ethics during the
process of call-in and fortune telling. The fortune teller mainly gives advice and recommendations according to common sense and scientific perspectives to audiences, instead of exaggeration, deification or bragging his reputation. Besides, the way that fortune teller gives priority to the benefits of clients also meets the ethical principles in counselling. In comparison to other radio fortune telling programs, which contains embedded advertising or deception, Xuanlong's Happiness and Life Program can be a good model for other radio fortune telling practitioners. |
