This writing demonstrates the influence of the postmodern era and its values upon the writing of Chinese-American author Frank Chin. Specifically, this article examines the author's handling of a single character - Longman Kwan - from his 1994 novel, The Gunga Din Highway. In the few pages given over to this character, the reader is exposed to a number of postmodern literary techniques, including the compression of space and time; the media-influenced creation of self-identity; the regression to religion, superstition and myth; and the gradual collapse of the border between the reality of the novel and the reality of the reader. These illustrate the author's close association with the current values of postmodernism.
