This article analyzes the tendency toward variation in Russian proverbs. It is this author's opinion that the proverb's variation, the inability to pin it down with accuracy and concrete interpretation, is a linguistic feature. This author has analyzed the material of a dictionary of proverbs and proposed a classification system to be applied to the proverb components.
