This essay is dedicated to studying the form of first-person narration in the work of the modern Russian writer Mikhail Veller. In his psychological and stylistically interesting short story, intrigue is what stands out the most. Intrigue has its base on the principle of polyphony (M.Bakhkin): the selfsame event is viewed and interpreted by the eleven anonymous speakers in their own positions. The narration is addressed directly to the reader. Such literary method does not have any analogy in world literature, though its separate features are common to the works of such authors as N. Gogol, F.Dostoevsky, M.Zoschenko, and W.Faulkner. In this essay we analyze the speech means of the social characteristics of the narrators, define the philosophical-psychological dominant of every narrator, and reveal the role of "external construction" in the making of the intrigue of the novel.
