Taiwanese liver longer than ever, and Taiwan has officially become a member of the “aged society” club in 2018, which means people over 65 years old breaks the 14% mark of the population. These trends has made long-term care an important issue in public policy debate, and even dementia related to long-term care has developed the significance of public health and epidemic disease, both worth thinking ahead. Meanwhile, news reports in this digital age has diverged greatly in nature, shape and expression from the ones in the era of traditional media’s monopoly. On one hand, Internet-based news discourse, which has dominated the marketplace of ideas, allows the government, the corporate sector, non-profit organizations or other specific audience interested in these issues participate the content building in a sense. But the prevalence of fake news or disinformation prevail has hit the credibility of news reports. On the other hand, health news reports are a major channel of health messages received by older people, and affect their behavior of medical care seeking and health decisions about themselves. This research proposal explores the news discourse of long-term care and dementia in Taiwan with the theoretical perspective of knowledge brokering, reinterpreting how this kind of health news discourse was produced and constructed by the interaction of all relevant actors. The results and findings will be provided to the government and health policymakers for reference in shaping long-term care and dementia health campaigns.
