As an authoritative manual for ethics in daily life, Chu Shi’s Family Rituals exerted profound impacts on the cultural formation of historical East Asia, particularly Korea and Vietnam. Both kingdoms neighbored Imperial China, and both adopted Confucianism as state orthodoxy. Yet Chu Shi’s Family Rituals entered the two states via different routes, took different forms, and generated different consequences. Hence it is worthwhile conducting a comparative study of Chu Shi’s Family Rituals in Korea and Vietnam, and the study will contribute to not only the scholarship of Chu Shi’s Family Rituals but also the fields of Korean Studies and Vietnamese Studies. In my previous project, I adopted the approach of Book History to examine the transmission and reception of Chu Shi’s Family Rituals in Korea and Vietnam. My research showed that the Vietnamese version of Chu Shi’s Family Ritual might have been based on Yang Shen’s Duke Wen’s Family Rituals during the Ming era, which has been accepted by scholars as being authored by Chiu Jun. Based on this finding, the current project aims to compare Vietnam’s and Korea’s local editions of Chu Shi’s Family Rituals to understand its position in historical East Asia. More specifically, I aim to understand the forms of existence of Chu Shi’s Family Rituals in Korea and Vietnam by comparatively analyzing the content and the imagined interlocutors of various editions of the genre of “Chu Shi’s Family Rituals Q&A” in the two kingdoms. I plan to finish this project in two years. In the first year, I will compare the discourse and interlocutors of extant versions of Vietnamese and Korean genre of “Chu Shi’s Family Rituals Q&A.” I then will examine the relationships between Chu Shi’s Family Rituals on the one hand and Vietnamese and Korean local thoughts on the other as to determine the former’s position in Korea and Vietnam.
