Macao has the reputation of ‘Oriental Monte Carlo’ or ‘Oriental Las Vegas’ that is the world-famous gambling city. Under the influence of policies such as the liberalization of gaming concession and Individual Visit Scheme, Macao has entered a period of rapid development. Macao’s gambling revenue surpassed Las Vegas in 2006 and its GDP per capita surpassed Switzerland in 2013. However, as China took unexpected turn, Macao’s gaming revenue dropped sharply in 2015. From these economic development trajectories, we can observe the challenges and opportunities of Macao’s economic development structure, advance diversification of Macao’s economy and feature Macao’s dominant position.
In recent years, China has implemented national policies such as ‘One Belt and One Road’, ‘Development plan for the bay area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao’ as well as facing the gambling industry of neighboring countries. Under the circumstances, China has also planned the development strategy of ‘One Center and One Platform’ with the concept of ‘National needs and Macao’s superiority’. How does Macao lead economic development moving with its own advantages to improve the current situation that mainly relys on gambling industry? It becomes a great challenge for Macao’s development in future.
