The performance of space is closely related to the people. Nowadays, the urban space often produces environmental problems due to lack of users, or the lack of user-oriented design. In order to find proper directions for to solve these problems, the study investigates the relationship between users of different age groups and their spatial preferences in Keelung.

Keelung city is taken as case-study, using the in-depth interview method of environmental psychology, together with the KJ method for to analyze the results of interviews.
The interviews address several aspects of the urban space, including the formalized interactions of space and use: i.e. building height, planting, climate, traffic, and commercial functions.
Finally, the study summarizes the preferences of age groups and frames appropriate design indicators for the improvement of urban space. Indeed, the study hopes to contribute to making the design of space closer to the needs and preferences of urban users.
