My research project aims to explore the disadvantaged “Yao” community based in the Labor Park, Shenyang, Northeastern China. Yao refers to males who dress as street hookers. The project examines the complicated contexts from which the community arose and how the community constructs so called “lanbility” through its members’ diverse nasty prostitution practices. It also looks into dynamic yet contested interactions between lanbility and queerness within the contexts of modern Chinese Tongzhi activisms. The project employs a qualitative approach by adopting a combination of in-depth interview and participant observation.
