Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the development of ego identity, of univ-ersity students, and to find out the factors influencing their ego identity. This study is based on E. Erikson's identity theory. The Ego Identity Scale was designed for the present study. The subjects of this study were 3,220 students from 25 colleges and universities. The findings are as follows: 1.Personal, family, and school factors account for the variances (7.5%) of students' ego identity. 2.The development of ego identity is unsatisfactory in two-fifth of the students: They face a crisis. 3.Humanitarian and altruistic values have a positive contribution to the development of their identity. This result supports E. Erikson's identity theory. Some recommendations: based on the preceding findings are offered to universities and the educational authorities.
