Purpose: To investigate the effectiveness of mat science training (MST) in improving the lumbar stability, muscle strength, muscular endurance, local blood flow, kinesthesia, and dysfunctions in patients with chronic lower back pain. Methods: Thirty women with chronic lower back pain participated in the study and were randomly assigned to MST group and control group. The MST group completed a 6-week program involving two 60-minute MST sessions per week after pre-test. Upon completing the program, the participants were tested again within one week. Data were analyzed using a two-way mixed design analysis of variance. Results: The visual analog scale and response time of the MST group was significantly decreased, and significantly lower than that of the control group. The oxy-Hb and SpO2 were decreased significantly, and the isokinetic peak torque of lumbar muscles, re-positioning accuracy were improved significantly in MST group. Moreover, compared with the control group, the response time was significantly higher in MST group after training. Conclusion: The 6-week MST program significantly improved the perceived pain, kinesthesia, local blood flow, and lumbar muscle strength. Moreover, the significant improvements in pain and response time was found for the participants who completed training.
