It is a phenomenon in Taiwan that for many sports, children have started receiving specialized training at an early age. In the context of competitive sports, as parents and coaches are the key players who have a great effect on the child, many parents choose to give up their career in order to be fully involved in their children's training, thus resulting in the phenomenon of parent-coaches with double roles. This situation is also common in many sports in other countries. The double roles of parent-coach and child-athlete may bring positive and negative effects. In the past, many studies focused more on exploring youths' participation in non-competitive sports. However there has been no study on their participation in competitive sports. Through the introduction of the effects significant others have on young athletes' participation, this paper aims to draw more attention to the previously described phenomenon and encourages more studies to further explore this topic and propose ways for improvement.
