In recent years, hazing and initiation ceremonies into sports teams has become widely reported in media. However, so far literature did not fully comprehend the nature of these activities and behaviors. According to literature, hazing has been defined as "any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers them regardless of a person's willingness to participate." In consideration of the lack of exploration focused on hazing in sports culture in Taiwan, related theories, literature and empirical studies were reviewed in this article. The definition of hazing, as well as the categories of hazing activities and its influences were proposed based on the previous research. In general, these hazing rituals in sport teams serve the significant role of introducing new team members to integrateinto the groups. Common activities include the veteran-rookie hierarchy, consumption (primarily of alcoholic drinks), ritualized nudity, task performance, and physical and psychological abuse. The findings of this review would provide information for future research when examining the nature of hazing.
