Numerous existing methods can be used to provide guidance services at exhibitions, including tour guides, audio recordings, kiosks, and QR Codes. However, such methods have shortcomings, such as a shortage of guidance devices, high cost of purchasing or renting guidance devices, and complex operations. In this paper, we compare the advantages and disadvantages of these existing methods. Subsequently, we propose the design of a near-field communications (NFC) technology-based system as a guidance service for exhibitions. The proposed structure utilizes patrons' smartphones as a guidance device to overcome the shortage of guidance devices, thereby reducing the involved costs. The smartphones detect prepositioned NFC tags placed at certain locations around an exhibition and multimedia content for the exhibition can be accessed through a network to enable the system to act as a guide for the patrons. Compared with other methods, such as QR Code guidance, the proposed method provides a guidance system that is simpler to operate. The proposed approach improved upon several shortcomings of existing guidance approaches. We also applied the design to implement a guidance service system that simulated providing guidance service at an exhibition at the Hwa Kang Museum.
