This paper evaluates the applicability of coating formulations to produce high quality ink jet papers through ink absorptivity and image performance of coated papers using discrete coating formulations. Coating formulations containing different composition ratios of silica pigment, polyvinyl alcohol binder, and soy protein binder, were studied. The results are summaried as following: 1.Ink absorption and image sharpness of the coated paper were developed with an increment of silica pigment in the coating color. 2.It was evident that addition of polyvinyl alcohol and soy protein in the coating color using silica pigment was effective in developing the image color performance. As to the image sharpness, the coated paper with addition of soy protein improved in sharpness but was ineffective in polyvinyl alcohol. Ink jet printing quality could be developed by adding silica pigment, polyvinyl alcohol, or soy protein in the coated paper.
