The issue of the learner's L1 in the ELT has been extensively debated for a long time. Although there are many studies exploring the issue of exclusion / inclusion of L1 in the ELT, few studies explore the Chinese-English setting in Taiwan. This study is, therefore, done to find out the teacher's and the student's attitudes and opinions about the medium of instruction in the English class to facilitate the student's learning process. The participants were 592 students enrolled in general English classes and 48 teachers of a comprehensive university in Taipei. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods are applied, including questionnaires and interviews. An independent-samples t-test was performed to ascertain NET's and CET' opinions on the use of Chinese, and a one-way ANOVA was applied to compare the opinions of teachers and students. In addition to the NET's tendency to reject the use of Chinese in class, their attitudes towards Chinese use vary among themselves. The different opinions between teacher groups and student groups are discussed as well. The suggestion is made based on the findings.
