This paper aims to find reasons why Chinese and Taiwanese women enter the profession of prostitution from “push and pull” theory perspective.
An understanding of the reasons which “push” girls into this path of life will help to think how to protect them from doing this step in the life. Discussion of the “pull” factors could influence the improvement of current working conditions in the legitimate sphere, so prostitution won’t be a luring alternative any more. The happiness of each person is a part of the happiness of the whole nation.
To conduct this research 62 questionnaires were made – 28 for Chinese sex workers in Taiwan and 34 for Taiwanese. Also the author interviewed 2 Chinese women arrested for prostitution in Taiwan and 4 Taiwanese women in karaoke parlors.
The results showed that motives of Taiwanese and Chinese women are different, as well as their situations in their family. At least half of Chinese women had to take care of the children, while 85 percent of Taiwanese were single middle-aged women without children. Main push factor for Chinese women was the need of money for raising their children and helping elderly parents, while for Taiwanese it was small salary of legitimate jobs. The exhausting work doesn’t influence women’s decision so much; the only thing that important for them is financial remuneration. On the other side of “pull” factors the main one is “fast and easy money” as well as great flexibility of the work for Chinese women followed by the hope for an opportunity to open their own business.
Another major finding of this work, in spite of the years of breaking the old traditions under the communist rule in China, Chinese prostitutes in this research are still more conservative in terms of giving birth to children and taking care of elderly parents, while Taiwanese workers of the sex industry are more oriented on self-achievements.
