Taiwan has excellent experiences in practical design and testing capabilities of aerodynamics, structure, flight control, avionics, material processing and QA system, those technologies can be readily applied to the main processes of the wind turbine developments-no matter of small or big blade in wind turbine, such as how to design a blade configuration, composite blade design, adjustable pitch, variable speed and brake mechanism designs, etc.
The flourishing growth of the wind turbine industry has offered the aeronautical industry to stride into this field recently. At present, Taiwan has already made a 25KW wind turbine system with 6m length composite blade which was designed by the Aeronautical System Research Division (ASRD, or ARL).With the same technologies and experiences, the longer blade is being executed and will be extended to even larger scale systems in the future. Furthermore, several companies in Taiwan organize the wind turbine alliance and plan to set up an onshore 2MW level wind turbine with 40m wind blade within years. It can be expected that there will be a large scale wind turbine system developed by Taiwan in the near furture
This paper describes the development procedures of turbine blade from design to manufacturing and validation before being assembly. Some of technologies transferred from aircraft design are depicted in detail.
