摘要: Over the past decade, tourism has played an extremely important role in the development of rural communities in Vietnam, especially in Con Phung, a tourist destination in Ben Tre Province, Vietnam. Neighborhood inhabitants have started to realize the worth of the heritage resources and preserve them. However, tourism development might lead to predicted invisible consequences on commodification of the region's conservative traditions and culture or conservative or negative attitudes among local residents. Therefore, studying people’s perceptions and attitudes toward tourism development in their locality will provide good implications for tourism development policy making in the area.
The purpose of this paper was to describe the evolution of tourism in Con Phung drawing on Mitchell’s creative destruction model (1998) by tracking three variables of entrepreneur’s investment, the number of visitors and residents’ attitudes toward tourism development in Con Phung. Second was to evaluate Con Phung’s position in the model of creative destruction based on information from the description of the three variables. Finally was to provide recommendations for Con Phung’s tourism development in the future.
The qualitative approach was used; primary data was collected from key informants including local government, entrepreneurs and local residents via interviews, researcher’s observations and photographs. Interviews with 20 respondents randomly chosen from local residents were conducted. The interview questions focused on clarifying four aspects of the resident’s perceptions towards the impact of tourism on the local economy, the living environment, the social environment and the tourism future plans. Secondary data sources were collected from business directories, brochures, archives, local newspapers, annual reports and business plan of the travel company and other tourism-related documents provided and analyzed by the municipality.
The results of the study showed that tourism development in Con Phung has been growing rapidly and has received considerable investment from many different resources. Both the number of tourists and the level of tourism products and services consumption increased year by year. The majority of residents have a positive attitude toward tourism development in Con Phung. Especially, tourism has positively contributed to the overall local economy development and improved local public infrastructures. In addition, the resident’s living conditions and awareness of preserving Con Phung’s heritage were enhanced and improved. Negative impact of tourism activities was reported to include river pollution and employment instability. However, most residents were willing to support the development of tourism and provided some recommendations for the future tourism development planning in the locality. As predicted, Ben Tre was into the second stage, “Advanced Commoditization” as specified in the process of Mitchell’s creative destruction model (1998), with signs that it is moving into the third stage that is “Early Destruction stage”.
The suggestions are provided for Con Phung’s tourism development in the future to avoid the destruction. This can be done by raising residents’ awareness of the threat of overexploiting heritages, leading the tourist site in focus and surrounding communities to the last stage of the model (Post-destruction). This study could make significant contributions to improving how people sustainably benefit from heritages and how the local government protect and manage Con Phung’s tourism activities as well.
