In early times, liuqinwasan accompany instrument in liuqin drama,a Chinese folk opera, with simply two strings and seven frets. Until the 1970,Wang Hui-ran successfully developed a four-stringed liuqin, making liuqin a solo instrument.
Liang Hong-yu is a concerto for liuqin composed by Wang Hui-ran and Wang Hong-yi in July 2005, based on the story of the heroine Liang Hong-yu and applied materials from traditional opera. What are the differences between liuqin pieces before andLiang Hong-yuconcerning performing techniques and composing methods? Clarifying musical background and structure of the piece through data collection and musical analyses, comprehending the core of the piece concerning interpretation and further presenting composers’ thoughts by depth interview with the composers and the actual performing experiences, this paper is expected to bring some new conceptions and contributions for future researchers as well as liuqin music.
