When Bulgakov adapted Dead Souls for stage performance, he made special efforts to make sure that his characters have lively conversations. As soon as the Gogol-style characters appear, the absurdity of Russia's serfdom is shown. This paper analyzes Bulgakov's attempts in adapting the novel Dead Souls and composing Chichikov's Adventures as well as his pursuit of arts in his adaptation.
