Extensive reading has been proven in many empirical studies to be very effective in improving many different aspects of student's English. This study is aimed at investigating the effects of an extensive reading program on the language and attitude development of students in a technical college in Taiwan. An action research is adopted in this study. The subjects are forty-eight freshmen majoring in tourism and leisure management. They were required to read any English materials they were interested in at home and then hand in a short reading report once a week. During each week of the program, the teacher read aloud one piece of English reading material to arouse the subjects' reading interest. After each class, the teacher's observations and reflections were recorded. At the end of the semester, a questionnaire containing 10 statements and 2 open-ended questions was distributed to the class to elicit responses to the extensive program. Finally, data from the analysis of the questionnaires, the teacher's class observations and reflections, and the students' reading reports all reveal that most subjects held a positive attitude toward the extensive reading program.
