Singing is one of the most original and oldest musical arts, and considered by many as a natural human instinct. With the changes brought about by historical and cultural developments, the art of singing has also gradually evolved, resulting in different singing styles and performance criteria. Today the vocal arts consist of systematic singing methods and techniques developed over time with the aim to elevate the artistic value of vocal music. The deep allure of vocal arts transcends the boundaries of nations and languages, attracting singers from all over the world to dedicate themselves to this particular realm of music. The inherent beauty of singing lies in the emotions and meanings conveyed by the vocalists through their unique voices, supported by correct vocal training and techniques. As a student of vocal arts, I am especially interested in the theory and application of breathing methods and resonance cavity.
This study seeks to discuss the use of breathing methods and resonance cavity in singing, and after careful research and analysis, to apply various vocal techniques and cognitive skills to the interpretation of eight vocal pieces. The following topics are discussed in the study: 1. Human respiratory organs, effective breathing methods for singing, the application of breathing methods to vocal training; 2. Various types of resonance cavity, the relationships between various resonance cavities, mutual application of breathing and resonance cavity; 3. Analysis and performance interpretation of four Chinese opera pieces; 4. Analysis and performance interpretation of four art songs.
It is hoped that this study will provide knowledge and insight into correct, effective techniques and cognitive skills that may be helpful to vocalists and music aficionados, adding to the existing body of literature on various aspects of vocal arts.
