經過一番的考慮,復經一段時間的探究之後,決定以〈杜威教材論的評析〉(A critical analysis of John Dewey’s thoughts about subject matter)為2012 年度的研究計畫之專題。
By following the current project of translation and annotation of Experience and Education I am executing, I planned to submit a new proposal of that of Experience and Nature, published in 1925 and reissued in 1929, another John Dewey’s classic on the list of recommendation promulgated by the National Science Council. However, a NSC officer told me that the new proposal will not be granted until the old one accomplished, reviewed, revised, and published. She suggested me to submit a proposal not in the same nature. After some thoughtful consideration and preliminary literature review, I decided to submit this proposal. On the premise of choosing an appropriate topic to narrow down the range of research proposal in order to guarantee its smooth execution, this proposal aims at fulfilling the following four purposes: (1) To extend the beneficial effect of the current project, “The translation and annotation of Experience and Education”; (2) To follow up the research line of history of curriculum I have built up for more than a dozen years; (3) To re-interpret John Dewey’s thoughts on subject matter in a more through way; and (4) To sort out the implications of John Dewey’s thoughts on subject matter for the current states of curriculum theory and practices in Taiwan. In concrete terms, this study will try to answer the following five research questions: 1. What are the historical, social, and cultural background as well as theoretical foundation of John Dewey’s thoughts on subject matter? 2. What are the thoughts of John Dewey on the meaning, nature, classification, selection, organization and utilization of subject matter? 3. What are the thoughts of John Dewey on the relationship among subject matter, teaching methods, teacher, student, subject, and curriculum? 4. What are the understandings and misunderstandings of his contemporaries and later generations on John Dewey’s thoughts on subject matter? 5. What are the implications of John Dewey’s thoughts on subject matter for the current states of curriculum theory and practices in Taiwan? A well written technical report will be finished in one year. A paper written based on the report to be submitted to scholarly published journals is also to be expected as well.
