This paper demonstrates effective strategies and techniques for using DVD films to upgrade students' motivation as well as reading and writing skills in the Freshman English class. The six film-related techniques and activities for pedagogical purpose to be demonstrated and discussed are: 1.) getting students involved in selecting films; 2.) using the whole film with dual subtitles; 3.) using DVD technology; 4. ) pre-viewing activities; 5.) viewing activities; and 6.) post-viewing activities. This paper 15 expected, first, to assist teachers seeking effective and motivational supplementary materials for reinforcing the textbook contents and, second, to increase unversity students' interest in learning English and consequently, promote their English proficiency.
