Porter's Miranda stories give not only an account of Miranda's initiation but also that of the older generation. These older or mature women undergo female bildungsroman. They succeed eventually in it and come to be whole unto themselves. Beyond doubt, they have to assume what DeMouy called the "burden of freedom" (p.15). Let us listen to them attentively, understand them profoundly, and support them sincerely.
