Recent changes in student demographics and the workplace have generated interest in computer-enhanced education delivery. However, online learning programs often face a higher rate of student attrition than conventional course. Furthermore, although CALL strategies are widely implemented in language education, there is a lack of research on how to retain students in language learning programs. Research is slowly being published to assist the course developer and educational institutions with reducing attrition. Computer enhanced learning is a new field, with a scarcity of subject-specific research on keeping students in language classes that are partially or totally online. Educators can look to research in general online learning for inspiration on how to keep students actively engaged in learning languages with the computer.
