This research project aims to disrupt both the ‘queer-free’ phenomenon within the local Hakka studies field and the ‘Hakka-free’ phenomenon within the local queer studies field. It calls for radical, yet complicated, queer politics inscribed by ethnic equality by rallying local Hakka male queers like me. By dint of telling our shameful gender/sexual and ethnic stories, we are determined to queer mainstream Hakka gender/sexual discourse and to racialize local queer studies. The main questions this research project is to look into include: (1) How do we define the notion of Hakka male queer? (2) What is the socio-cultural context from which local Hakka queer activism arises? (3) How do local Hakka male queers construct and perform their gender/sexual and ethnic identities? (4) How do their gender/sexual and ethnic identities and performativities impact upon both local queer and Hakka communities? This research project employs a qualitative approach by adopting a combination of online text analysis and offline in-depth interview.
