This study used FORMOSAT-2 satellite imagery taken in July, 2005 to distinguish forest cover types and to compare stand conditions of forestations on the Ma-Kung Island, Peng-Hu County. The major forest cover types on the island include Leucaena glauca stands and man-made forestations dominated by Casuarina. In terms of forest cover classification, results showed that Leucaena glauca stands have a very distinct reflectance pattern in the satellite imagery, and can be easily distinguished from other land covers. Comparisons of reflectance patterns showed that the near-infrared band is more useful in distinguishing forest types. The reflectance of Leucaena glauca stands is quite homogeneous, and can be easily distinguished from man-made forestation with 77% total accuracy. In contrast, different forest structures could have similar reflectance patterns, indicating a limited applicability of FORMOSAT-2 satellite imagery in classifying multilayer forests. In terms of NDVI, high variations also existed in different forestations. Stands on reforestation land and in-land military land generally have better stand condition due protection of remaining trees and more favorable land condition respectively. In contrast, forestations facing north or east, and coastal windbreaks nearer to sea shore, have poorer stand condition, suggesting that seasonal wind from the northeast could be one of the primary factors affecting the forest condition on the island.
